All you students and bookworms, beware of Starbucks downtown started by hardatworkeli
My wife was at the Starbucks in Market Street yesterday drinking a smoothie and doing some work for grad school, and the manager came up to her and inquired as to whether or not she was planning on buying anything else. He said, "You've been here all day!" She had been there for two hours. This experience is not uncommon. What kind of coffee shop is this? This is Frederick, not NYC. I recommend Frederick Coffee Co. on Shab Row. They know how to treat their customers.
need day trip ideas started by joules
Where can my DH and I go for a day that's within about a 2-hr drive of Frederick? We're not really outdoorsy/types. We like to explore interesting little towns, but we're not into antiques or historic battlefields or county fairs. Maybe we should head to Baltimore or DC - we haven't lived in this region very long, so we haven't explored Baltimore or DC much yet. Any suggestions?
Beware of the Lube Center on Rt. 85 started by shawns
I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful of getting your oil changed at the Lube Center on 85 (near Jerry's, Popeye's, and 7-11). I usually change the oil in my girlfriend's car for her, but one week she needed to get it changed while I was traveling for work, so she took it to the Lube Center (which was the last time her oil was changed before this afternoon).

Today, her car was due for another oil change and I did it for her. When I went to change the oil filter I saw that it was the same Mobil 1 oil filter that I had installed the last time I changed her oil (Mobil 1 filters are fairly expensive and are not filters that quick lube type places would install). I'm not sure if this is a systemic problem with the Lube Center, or if they were just attempting to take advantage of a single, young woman, but be careful if you take your car to the Lube Center and make sure that they do the full service that you pay for.

My girlfriend hasn't talked to the people at the Lube Center, but I packed up the Mobil 1 filter for her and encouraged her to at least go there and ask for a refund.

    Grocery Store (food, carts etc)
Construction Zone (blocks, toy tools etc.)
At the Beach (water and sand tables)
    Safari Room (tent, animal toys)
    Train Room
    Maths & Science Room
Art Room (playdough, chalk wall, paints)
Home Sweet Home (baby dolls, strollers, kitchen, etc)
    Bubble Room
Lunch room so you can bring your own snacks, lunch or it is right beside Burger King or you can have pizza delivered. Kids are Heroes Day started by TeamCharlie
You may have seen the article in the FNP about Kids are Heroes (www.kidsareheroes.com) published on June 10. It is a website that promotes and showcases children doing exceptional things in our community. The idea is that when other kids see the site, it inspires them to do something in their own neighborhood.

The FSK Mall is having a "Kids are Heroes" Day on September 6th. Many of the local "heroes" will be there spreading the word about their causes and collecting donations. There will be a ceremony where they will receive their "Kids are Heroes" certificates. We need a celebrity emcee to help bring in people. Anyone have any suggestions?
One World Everybody Eats started by Jessica_Feltz
I read about this restaurant in UT where nobody is turned away from a meal for inability to pay. Everybody is asked to pay what they can afford, or what they feel the meal warranted--no set prices. Those without disposable income are offered opportunities to "volunteer" in the kitchen, garden, or elsewhere in the community in exchange for meal vouchers (one hour of volunteering = one meal voucher). Children under the age of 8 can also eat off of their parents' meal vouchers. Or they can ask to have their meal portions reduced to fit their financial budget. The kitchen also serves complimentary Dal and Rice (Indian beans & rice) to absolutely everybody...no conditions. The intention of this non-profit restaurant is to end hunger, beginning within their own community.

From the website: "The kitchen has no set menu. This lets the cooks use their creativity to prepare a variety of seasonal soups, salads, entrees, and desserts. The food stuffs are all-organic and the cuisine ranges from vegeterian to meat. There is a large vegan selection. The cafe provides water, coffee and teas, regular and soy milk but no soft drinks or alcohol. You may bring non-alcoholic drinks if you like."

Their website is www.oneworldeverybodyeats.com. How do you think something like this would go over in Frederick?
Kids eat free on July 15 at CalTort started by guy1320
That's right--not only was California Tortilla voted Best Vegetarian Restaurant by Washingtonian Magazine readers, we also were voted Best Kid's Casual Restaurant. Yee-ha!

So to celebrate, on Tuesday, July 15th (tomorrow) we're giving all kids 10 and under a free kid's meal. The only rules are that the kids must be present (6'3" ten year olds will be looked upon suspiciously) and one adult entree must be purchased for every 2 free kid's meals.

And if that's not enough of an incentive, for every kid's meal we give away that day, we'll be giving a free kid's meal coupon to the fabulous Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The website is www.wagsforhope.org and the orientation is Sunday July 13th at 1PM at the Holly Hills Country Club. You'll need to sign up through the website to get started. I am also just diving in to blogging about things in our community. If anyone is interested that address is http://gabeoneill.wordpress.com. I have yet to learn all the do's and dont's as there is much more to blogging than just spitting out your thoughts, but I am working on it. Would be happy to hear some suggestions from all you professionals out there. Cheers.
Carnival worker on bail for child molestation to work Frederick Fair in Sept. started by Rene_shoemaker
Iam very concerned because I was told this company comes to the fair, called Wheelock rodes.NY has liberal laws allowing folks like this to work at carnivals around kids.I hope somebody in MD does something to prevent him from working here.He is out on bail and related to the owner of the ride provider, thats why they won't fire him and want this hushed up.

Yet another Frederick Food Blog started by sixgables
Hi all, I just wanted to announce that I've thrown yet another Frederick Food Blog into the ring (perhaps our town slogan should be "We like to eat."). I enjoy reading all the others I've found, but there didn't seem to be another directed at vegetarians. Now there is! My family and I love to cook and eat out and, well, talk about cooking and eating out. We just don't eat meat, is all. I'm giving brief restaurant reviews, checking out the farmer's markets, and trying new things.

Not everybody uses Craigslist... started by Cygnus
On the website for the popular HoCoMo Freddie's Trading Post classified publication is a supposedly companion biweekly called the Monocacy Valley Trading Post. Has anyone ever seen print versions of this? If so, where?

And are there any other places to run classified ads in Frederick County besides the News-Pest or Craigslist?

I wonder why the Pennysaver doesn't publish out here; it gets wide use in Howard and Anne Arundel Counties. And the Merchandiser that I get is nothing like the publication of the same name across the Mason-Dixon Line; there are no reader classifieds.

There's a real business opportunity here in Frederick County for someone to get a hard copy publication of reader ads into consumers' hands.

For giveaways, there's always Freecycle, and I use it regularly.
need a restaurant for 75-100 started by joules
I need to hold a business dinner for 75-100 people in Frederick. We've been to Mealey's, Red Horse, Dutch's Daughter. We want somewhere nice, but we're feeling a budget pinch this year, so I'm looking for someplace new.
    Walkable downtown? started by ljadams
I posted a few months ago about moving to Frederick with my husband and two small kids. We are getting closer and closer to making the move, having visited quite a bit now. One of the biggest criteria for us is a city/town where we can walk to get most of the things we need. I hate driving our car around the suburbs all day with two kids strapped in to pick up a few things. I know there are a lot of restaurants and interesting stores in downtown, but are there also basic stores? I saw the posts about a lack of a grocery store (bummer), but what about a drugstore, bakery, deli, butcher, etc? If I have to drive for groceries, fine, but I don't want to move downtown and have to drive everywhere for other things.

    Thanks!

Question about Onica Prall Preschool started by fungusblogs

    Police News started by luckygirl
We live right by Rte 15 and often, (esp tonight for a good 30 minutes and last week gun shots!!), hear sirens, ambulances, etc., etc. Is there any way to find out what is going on when it is happening, or shortly thereafter? The FNP never seems to report any of this, and as a concerned neighbor it would be nice to know what is going on in my own community.
