Walkable downtown?

Started by ljadams · 1 month ago

I posted a few months ago about moving to Frederick with my husband and two small kids. We are getting closer and closer to making the move, having visited quite a bit now. One of the biggest criteria for us is a city/town where we can walk to get most of the things we need. I hate driving our car around the suburbs all day with two kids strapped in to pick up a few things. I know there are a lot of restaurants and interesting stores in downtown, but are there also basic stores? I saw the posts about a lack of a grocery store (bummer), but what about a drugstore, bakery, deli, butcher, etc? If I have to drive for groceries, fine, but I don't want to move downtown and have to drive everywhere for other things.

Thanks!

  • Yes, you can get pretty much all of the above downtown:

Between the bakeries and specialty food shops downtown and a couple of quick convenience pick up places (not all of which are on the lists above) you really only need to hit the grocery store for staples (heck, since hey conveniently stock a small selection of grocery items, I've been known to buy milk and O.J. at the liquor store on the corner of 6th and Bentz.)

And, on the north end, the Seventh Street Safeway isn't really all that far. Although I admit I've never walked there (although I have walked to the Greek Fest at the church across the street or to Hood's campus with the dog).
  • When I lived on 5th Street I walked to the 7th Street Safeway, but it is a haul with groceries in hand. I don't know of a butcher in Frederick at all, but there is a nice Italian deli on Church Street. There is a Farmers Market on Thursdays on East Street during the growing season. There is a pharmacy on Market and 3rd Street. I hate running errands in the car as well, so I keep it to a minimum. We usually shop at the Common Market and the Farmers Market on Baughman's Lane (you have to drive there). There is a city-run gym in Baker Park, on Bentz Street. Proof is a great bakery on Patrick Street.

I'd love to see a challenge to do all of one's shopping downtown Frederick. What do you say?

Downtown Frederick is certianly NOT a smaller version of New York City or Chicago. It is small and cute and has lots of specialty shops. Nonetheless, it is by FAR the best city to live in Maryland, in my humble opinion. And downtown is the best part.

    Good Luck!
